Native Land

When you marry, marry a lady anthropologist. She will have been trained for years never to interrupt you and to say only just enough to keep you talking.

In english culture the natives have developed theire own specialists, sociologists, who teach them to explain variation among themselves in terms of regions, age and class. Class is an interesting native concept that has been adopted, quite unreasonably, for cross cultural use by sociologists, strugling with desperate dedication to bring it line with a now discarded notion of science, one that relates it to universality unreducibility to statistical data.
Little wonder, then, that the “class” of sociologists bears little relation to native institutions. This is enfactically not yer another book about the english class system, indeed, class is largely irrelevant to it.
